Selectmen reject proposal for work on Dummy Bridge

Aug 19, 2014

Selectmen last Tuesday voted against entering into an agreement with the state Division of Marine Fisheries to do work on the Dummy Bridge in Onset.

Ross Kessler, a representative with the state Division of Marine Fisheries, came before Selectmen in January to propose a fishing pier and a paved parking lot addition to the Dummy Bridge. He said the state would pay for the construction.

Kessler came back to Selectmen last Tuesday with revisions to his plan, such as making the parking lot out of a permeable surface and scraping the fishing pier concept.

Selectmen voted 3-1 in favor of not entering the agreement. Selectmen Judith Whiteside, Alan Slavin and Patrick Tropeano voted against the agreement, while Peter Teitelbaum voted in favor of it.

Whitside had reservations about the ability of the department to provide access to handicapped citizens of Wareham.

"I am loathe to grant permission to any body that doesn't provide access to everyone," she said.
