Setting the stage for  'Living Healthy'

Apr 1, 2011

If you’re looking to get a healthy start to spring, follow the three “E’s.”

“Energize, enrich, empower... That’s the combination for passion,” says Jacqueline Bonfiglio-Naja, founder of the holistic health website The Women In You (www.thewomeninyou.info) and executive producer of the show "Living Healthy" on Wareham Community Television.

“Passion allows you to be proactive about your health,” Bonfiglio-Naja explains.

The Wareham native, who now lives in New Bedford, describes her mission as helping women and their families take charge of their health.

An aesthetician for more than 30 years, she specializes in non-invasive age management skin care at her New Bedford salon, Jacqueline’s Advanced Skin Therapy.

In 2008, she parlayed her holistic approached to wellbeing into the launch of the website The Women in You, designed to bring holistic health care practitioners together to inform the public about alternative and holistic health choices.

Holistic medicine is the art and science of healing that addresses the whole person and invokes the innate power of the body to try to heal itself. It views the physical, mental and spiritual aspects of a person's life as equally important in approaching options for treatment, the management of symptoms, the awareness of disease, and the promotion of a healthy lifestyle.

“The practitioners are about educating,” Bonfiglio-Naja says. Her website isn’t limited to women but, “Women are the main hold. If we can educate women, we’re educating the family.”

The website gives an overview of various ways to improve one’s health using alternative treatments. Local holistic nutritionists, acupuncturists, gynecologists, and chiropractors are all active members of the site.

Last year, The Women In You was awarded a grant from the United Way of Greater New Bedford’s 2010 Community Building Mini-Grant Program, and that became the launching point for WCTV's "Living Healthy."

“Every program we do is formatted on the now,” Bonfiglio-Naja says. “All the information is current. . .  It’s very confusing all the information that is out there on health issues . . . Things change quickly.”

Now in its second season, the show has been picked up by Portuguese Channel. The show also airs on community television in Rochester/Marion, New Bedford, Dartmouth, Fairhaven, and Fall River.

Bonfiglio-Naja says this year’s goal will be “paying it forward” by promoting the resources that allow the show to flourish.

Bonfiglio-Naja credits WCTV's Steve Ruiz for his help in making the show possible and Idyll Eyes Productions that helps with the post-production aspect of the show. She also encourages any small group or organization to apply to the Community Building Mini-Grant Program. (Deadline is April 8.)

Living Healthy is hosted by Wareham resident and natural medicine consultant Jackie Bell. The show airs on WCTV Mondays at 7:30 p.m.

You can look forward to shows featuring Wareham holistic healthcare practitioners Sally Hamer of My Practice Holistic Center in West Wareham and Jeanna Polonchek of Sole Remedy in West Wareham.
