For 40 years, the Wareham Community Associates has held an annual clambake raising money for its scholarship fund. This year, it’s taking a swing in a new direction, as it plans to host a golf tournament fundraiser instead.

The tournament will take place Saturday, Sept. 7 at the Little Harbor Golf Club, with registration starting at 7 a.m.

The Associates have been a part of the Wareham community for over a hundred years, and have given over a hundred thousand dollars in scholarships since the 1960s, said member Apryl Rossi.

While the clambake has been “well received,” the Associates saw declining profits in recent years as the cost of goods went up, said Rossi. Also, she said, as the average age of Associate members went up, the work involved in putting it on became more taxing.

The Associates got a 501c3 non-profit designation this past year, and decided to try and establish a different fundraising tradition.

The tournament will have registration at 7 a.m. and an 8 a.m. shotgun start.

There will be raffles, with prizes having been donated by local businesses, as well as prizes for playing out on the green, with awards going to the longest drive and other achievements. Among the other prizes, JT Engineering has provided a pair of Patriots tickets which will be auctioned off.
