Shopper saved at Shaw's by samaritan
One East Wareham woman has a mysterious, kind-hearted elderly woman to thank for saving her day last Friday.
On that day, Linda Landis went grocery shopping at Shaw's on Marion Road. Like any other trip to the supermarket, she shopped, carted her groceries out to her car, put the groceries in her trunk and began her drive home.
She said about halfway home to East Wareham she went to grab something from her pocketbook and noticed it was gone.
"I panicked -- I have high blood pressure and my blood pressure shot up," Landis said.
Landis was terrified the pocketbook would be found in a shopping cart at Shaw's and stolen. She said her phone, wallet, Medicaid cards and "quite a bit of money" were in the wallet.
"It was everything," she said.
A friend of hers had her pocketbook stolen recently, so she was aware of all of the cancelled cards, paperwork and hours on the phone it would take to get things back to normal.
On the frantic drive back to Shaw's, town workers had tied up traffic on Main Street as they worked on snow removal.
"Those three minutes were like three hours for me," she said.
When she got to Shaw's, Landis asked an employee if they had any missing pocketbooks. When she told the employee what color it was he gave her a small smile and said, "You're a lucky person."
He produced her pocketbook and said an elderly woman had returned it. She didn't leave a name or any information, but Landis said she wants the mystery woman to know how much her action was appreciated.
"I'm just so grateful," she said. "Thank God that lady was honest."
She said she believed many people would just empty the wallet and walk away if they found an unattended pocketbook.
"I just hope that lady sees this and knows how much I appreciate it," Landis said.
