Sidewalk construction in Wareham Village intends to fix settling issues, 'spruce' area

May 17, 2017

Construction is underway this week on the sidewalk on Main Street in Wareham Village, five years after major work was done in the same area.

This construction, which began last week, will “spruce up” the earlier work that was done, according to Community Economic Development Authority Director Peter Sanborn.

Many remember the “streetscape” revitalization project on Main Street in 2011, which widened sidewalks and made them handicap accessible. Streetscaping also included the addition of “bump-outs,” portions of the sidewalk that extend into the street as an aid to pedestrians.

Sanborn said the pavers that were put in place have settled over the last few years, causing them to drop below the curb line.

The excavation needs to be done to refresh the sidewalk and keep it from becoming a tripping hazard, Sanborn said, but nothing will be different in the design of the sidewalk.

While the sidewalk undergoes repairs this week, changes will be made to make it more durable and less susceptible to settling again in the future.

The official end date on construction is not yet determined, but Sanborn said he expects it to be finished by Memorial Day.
