A slice for the beach
Opening last Friday to a steady stream of curious, and grateful neighbors, Crusty's Pizza has nothing to do with The Simpsons but all to do with providing Swifts Beach residents with a place to grab a bite to eat on their way to and from the beach.
The dream of owners Bill and Ann-Marie Nickerson, the pizzeria is truly "a family place."
Ann-Marie's sister and brother-in-law, Kathy and John Gilmore, work behind the counter taking orders. Her niece and nephew man the deli and pizza oven, respectively, and Ann-Marie's mother provided a significant part of the funding.
And while much of their food currently comes from distributors, Ann-Marie follows a family recipe for meatballs, eggplant parmesan and other pasta dishes, and all the salads are homemade. An accomplished baker, Ann-Marie plans to offer homemade pies as well as desserts.
"It's family owned, family run, and family operated," said Bill, who has fond memories of visiting Swifts Beach over the 4th of July weekend when growing up in Plymouth and Carver.
The menu is family friendly as well. All kids meals come with a juice box and toy and delivery is available for busy parents.
But mostly, the pizzeria is catering to the beach community.
"We want to be a local convenience for the beachgoer," said Kathy Gilmore, who returned to Swifts Beach after years living in Florida, and said that there were no real easy options for food in the area.
To help accommodate beach business, there will be a "beachgoers special," which includes a mini-cooler with drinks, sandwiches, chips, and desserts for two. Within walking distance of the beach, pizza is served by the slice as well as by the pie. The restaurant also has cafe tables set up for visitors to sit out of the sun.
And many locals have been stopping by to check the place out, pick up fried food or just to say hello and welcome the new shop to the neighborhood.
"I'm so excited," said Alyson Ruggiano, who came in with two friends to grab a snack while hitting the beach after school."We've been walking by for the past month wishing this was open."
