Wareham's Municipal Maintenance workers have been working hard.

According to Selectmen, some Municipal Maintenance workers worked 35 to 50 hours straight following last week's snowstorm, often times with no breaks.

Selectmen commended Municipal Maintenance workers and other public safety workers for their efforts throughout the storm, which crippled cities and towns across southeastern Massachusetts and the Cape.

Town Administrator Derek Sullivan said the town had had 400 tons of salt and 300 tons of sand/salt mix in the Municipal Maintenance shed prior to the storm, and had ordered 600 tons of salt on Jan. 26 just prior to the storm. He also said the town hired 60 private contractors plowing during the storm.

Selectmen Chair Alan Slavin said AD Makepeace lent two heavy-duty loaders and gave the town use of five cranberry haulers to help carry away the snow.

Slavin thanked utility companies for their storm preparations, with few power outages seen across town. He also mentioned Riverside Cafe and Mumma Mary's as two businesses who provided town workers with food throughout the storm.

At the meeting, some residents complained about the town's response to the storm and said it was the worst snow removal that they had seen in decades. Selectmen said town officials would review how things were handled and discuss what improvements could be made.

"Municipal Maintenance went as far as they possibly could. They gave it everything they had," said Slavin.
