Southcoast Health Opens Makepeace Wound Care Center at Tobey Hospital

Aug 1, 2023

The Makepeace Wound Care Center will expand access to the service line across the region, Southcoast Health officials announced at a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

“The opening of the Makepeace Wound Care Center demonstrates Tobey Hospital’s commitment to providing another critical service to those across the region and our commitment that Southcoast Health is ready to take on the healthcare challenges of the future,” said Ray Kruger, president and CEO of Southcoast Health. “Thank you to everyone who made this project a success and for your continued dedication to providing exceptional care close to home.”

This is the third wound care location Southcoast has opened in the past 13 years with partner Healogics, the largest provider of advanced wound care services. The wound care centers at Charlton Memorial and St. Luke’s Hospitals average 14,000 visits annually.

The new center will deliver the same quality of wound care provided by the award-winning centers at St. Luke’s Hospital and Charlton Memorial Hospital.

“In partnership with the leading wound care expert Healogics, we will ensure that residents of Wareham, Rochester, Bourne, Carver and other surrounding towns have access to the latest techniques for treating and healing wounds,” Don Giumetti, chair of Southcoast Health Board of Trustees, remarked. “No one should have their life limited by painful wounds related to injuries, diabetes and other conditions.”

Nearly 7 million Americans are living with chronic wounds and this number is expected to increase by two percent annually over the next 10 years according to data from Healogics. Non-healing wounds can lead to severe complications such as infections, which can ultimately result in amputation or loss of life.

“Our wound care centers optimize outcomes and improve health for patients living with chronic wounds,” said Stacey Bancker, managing vice president of Healogics. “Our partnership leads to higher healing rates, fewer hospitalizations for patients and adds an advanced therapeutic outpatient service line for the Southcoast Health System.”
