Special Town Meeting will request ambulance, police cruisers

May 1, 2013

When Town Meeting reconvenes on June 18, a special Town Meeting requesting the lease of an ambulance and a purchase of police cruisers will convene as well.

Speaking during the Board of Selectmen's meeting on Tuesday, Town Administrator Derek Sullivan referenced a recent incident during which a back-up ambulance had to be called in from Marion in order to respond to an emergency as an example of why the town needs another ambulance.

Sullivan said that the money to lease the ambulance will come from the revenue generated by the EMS Department. The vote at the special Town Meeting will authorize the lease, and the estimated $75,000 cost of the ambulance will be included in the EMS budget.

Sullivan said he hopes voters will also approve the purchase of five new police cruisers, but said the exact number of cruisers has not been nailed down yet.

"We have issues with our police cruisers," said Sullivan. "The expenses are starting to outweigh their general value."

Town Meeting voters will be asked to appropriate approximately $200,000 for the cruisers, Sullivan said.

Selectman Patrick Tropeano noted that at one point, replacing police cruisers was a regular part of the town budget, and he wouldn't mind seeing that happen again.

"I would like to see ... the police cars rolled into the budget," said Tropeano. "Without police cars, you can't have a Police Department. You can't run to crime scenes."

Sullivan pointed out that the cost of holding a special election to vote on these measures would be approximately $15,000, while the cost for holding another Town Meeting is closer to $2,000.

The last day to submit warrant articles for the special Town Meeting is May 10. The board will close the warrant on May 13.
