Sports Roundup: Week of May 20

May 17, 2010

Baseball
Sophomore Ian Searles led the Vikings from both the mound and the plate to defeat Apponequet on Friday by a score of 4-1. Searles struck out seven and only allowed three hits on defense, while driving in two runs with a single on offense.

Senior Mike Sullivan apparently was inspired, as he gave up only three hits and a single run to Seekonk batters from the mound on Monday, and he went 3-for-4 with a triple and drove in two runs from the plate.  Also contributing to the Vikings' 9-1 victory were Tyler Pina, 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and Sean Conway, 3-for-4 and one RBI.

Softball
Taylor Nelson was perfect at the plate, delivering 4 out of Wareham's 6 hits against Apponequet on Friday. Alas, the rest of the team's offense was less helpful, as Apponequet won 13-3.

Nelson went 4-for-4 again on Monday, but this time she received more support from her teammates to edge out Seekonk 9-7.  Jessy Gadbois, Danielle Avila, and Amy Westgate had 2 hits apiece to help the offense.

Boys Volleyball
The Viking boys squandered what could have been their second win of the season, allowing Greater New Bedford Voc-Tech to crawl back with an 8-1 point run to win the second game 25-21. The Bears then won the next two games, 25-17 and 25-16, respectively, and the match.

Girls Outdoor Track
Kayla Vicino won the two mile with a time of 15:06 in the Vikings meet against Dighton-Rehoboth on Monday.

Marybeth Brogioli also did fairly well...she only won two individual events this week - the long jump with a leap of 15-3 1/2, and the triple jump with three leaps of 31-1 1/4.  But she also joined Makenzie Hetu, Marley Harunk, and Lexie Sylvia on the 4x100 relay team to run away with the victory.
