Wareham is set to receive slightly more state aid this fiscal year as Massachusetts’ $40.2 billion budget awaits Gov. Charlie Baker’s approval. The budget also includes an earmark for a group working to bring the Vietnam Veterans’ "Moving Wall" to town, which they hope will survive a potential veto.

The budget, which the state House of Representatives approved July 7, will provide Wareham with $13,232,181 in Chapter 70 education aid, an increase of $524,139 from the previous fiscal year. Unrestricted state aid is set at $1,976,561, an increase of $74,192. Unrestricted aid may be used for a variety of municipal spending.

“This budget provides critical funding to our cities and towns for local schools and other essential municipal services,” said State Representative Susan Williams Gifford. “I’m proud to support these funding increases on behalf of the residents of Wareham.”

The budget includes $25,000 for the Friends of Wareham Veterans Council to assist them with the cost of hosting the Vietnam Veterans Moving Wall Memorial at the Wareham Middle School track from Aug. 16 - 22.

“This has been a very challenging budget due to the revenue shortfalls and the possibility does exist that this funding may be subject to veto by Governor Baker,” said Gifford. “However, I am working with the governor's office to do everything possible so this does not happen.”

The budget, which has also been approved by the Senate, is now being reviewed by Baker, who has until July 17 to sign it and issue any vetoes.
