State lifts shellfishing ban

Some Wareham locations remain closed for more testing

The Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries has lifted its ban on shellfish harvesting, effective noon on Oct. 31.

The ban included Wareham waters and areas south of Cape Cod, from the Rhode Island border to Nantucket Sound. In Wareham, some areas remain closed to shellfishing, including the Broad Cove/East River and Onset Beach to Bay Street. Additional testing by the Division of Marine Fisheries is required before those sections are reopened.

“We hope to open this area as soon as possible,” read a post on the Harbormaster’s Facebook page.

The Wareham Harbormaster Department urges residents to review current maps before heading out to shellfish.

A toxic algea, known as Pseudo-Nitzschia, caused the ban. The algae were found in high concentrations in samples collected on Oct. 6 throughout Buzzards Bay.

Consuming infected shellfish could result in amnesic shellfish poisoning, with symptoms that can include vomiting, cramps, diarrhea and incapacitating headaches followed by confusion, disorientation, permanent loss of short-term memory, and in severe cases, seizures and coma.
