State officials say St. Patrick’s Church fire was electrical

The cause of a blaze that heavily damaged St. Patrick’s Church on Sept. 22 was electrical, state fire officials determined on Wednesday, Sept. 26.

The fire broke out just after 1 a.m. on Sept. 22 in the church loft. Wareham, Onset and crews from surrounding towns responded to the Catholic church on High Street.

“The fire was electrical,” said State Fire Marshal’s Office spokeswoman Jennifer Mieth. “It’s very sad because we know that a church fire really impacts the whole community.”

According to Mieth, the fire started in a space under the floorboards of the building’s second story loft. Officials said the building is structurally sound, but the fire caused $500,000 worth of damages. Services will be held in the adjacent Parish Center for the next few months while the church is repaired.
