Stephen C. Robbins, 98
Stephen C. Robbins, 98, of Wareham, died May 31 in the Nemasket Healthcare Center, Middleborough. He was the widower of the late Dorothy F. (Crittenden) Robbins.
He was born in Wareham and lived there all of his life.
Mr. Robbins worked as an Assistant Postmaster at the Wareham Post Office for many years before retiring in 1968.
He was a lifelong active and dedicated member of Wesley United Methodist Church. He served on the Board of Trustees and as a chair and was a member of many boards and committees. He was a dedicated family man and his grandchildren adored him. He was an honorary life member of the Cromesett Tribe Order of the Redmen.
In 1937, Mr. Robbins began his baseball career, playing for the Wareham Baseball Team. He later became the field manager. He led the team to the Upper Cape Cod League in 1946 and retired from the team as general manager in 1966.
Survivors include a daughter, Caryl Vermilya of Rochester; 2 sons, Lonnie Robbins of East Wareham and Bruce Robbins of Stanley, NC; a sister, Marie Balboni of Wareham; a nephew, Charles Robbins of East Wareham; a niece, Alice Akins of West Wareham; 9 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
His funeral will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 5, at the Wesley United Methodist Church, 462 Main Street, Wareham. Burial will follow in Centre Cemetery.
Visiting hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday at the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Hwy., Wareham.
