Student athlete on fast track to success

Mary Grace Brogioli, a senior at Wareham High School, is racing with her dreams.

The all-star runner and field hockey player was named “Student Athlete of the Month” for March by the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association.

Brogioli,18, has been a member of the Wareham High School field hockey team and both the spring and winter track teams since her freshman year and has been recognized several times for her athletic abilities.

A four-year letter winner in field hockey, Brogioli led her team in goals scored for two seasons. She was named a South Coast Conference All-Star three times and was also selected as a team captain as a senior.

Brogioli began her athletic career in high school as a field hockey player and said track was a natural choice for her, after field hockey finished up at the end of the fall semester.

“I knew I was good at running so I thought track would work,” she said.

Now in her final semester, she is a four-year letter winner on both the indoor and outdoor track teams and has served a captain during both seasons.

“She is a natural leader,” said Christopher Gardner, Brogioli’s track coach and a teacher at Wareham High School. “As an athlete she has matured and become a lot stronger.”

Gardner said hurdles are Brogioli's strongest skill on the track and Brogioli agreed.

“I think I am a better jumper than a runner,” she laughed.

Brogioli holds indoor track school records in the long jump, 4 x 200 and 4 x 400 and holds outdoor track school records in the 400 hurdles and 4 x 100.

She was honored again for her abilities when she was selected by the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association as the athlete of the month.

“It’s such an honor,” Brogioli said. “It was a huge surprise.”

The award honors students who set a positive example of leadership through academics and athletics in their communities.

Academically, Brogioli ranks fifth in her class. She has maintained a 4.0 GPA and received the Gold Scholar Award for being ranked among the top 10 students of her class during each of the first three years at school.

The honors student received a combined score of 1900 on the SAT exam. She attended the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine and received the Smith College Book Award for exemplifying academic achievement, leadership qualities, and concern for others.

Brogioli is a member of the Student Council, serves as class secretary, and is a member of the School Council, an advisory group to the principal made up of students, teachers, and community members. She is also a student member of the Wareham High School New England Association of Schools and Colleges committee, President of the Foreign Language Club, a religion teacher in her church, and has held a part-time job at Kool Kone for all four years of high school.

Brogioli said keeping up with her commitments has been hard work, but she wouldn’t have it any other way.

“It’s my determination,” she explained. “I don’t like to lose so I push myself to do my best.”

Brogioli said she is looking forward to taking the next step. She is set to attend the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester in the fall, where she plans to study medicine.

“It’s bittersweet... leaving,” she said. “I have been with the same people for four years. I am excited [to graduate] though.”

Brogioli is the daughter of Wareham Middle School teacher Wendy Brogioli and Kevin Brogioli, principal of Old Rochester Regional Junior High School and head coach of the Wareham High School boys basketball team.
