The Wareham School Committee celebrated a lot of good news on Wednesday night as a number of students were recognized for high test scores and GPAs.

A number of elementary and middle school students got perfect scores on at least one subject of last year's MCAS.

Before letting them go, School Committee Chair Geoff Swett asked the students how they got such good scores.

"I had good teacher," said one student to applause.

Another young girl who got a perfect math score had a good reason: "Because my mother's a math teacher."

Up next were students who won the John and Abigail Adams Scholarship, given to those in the top 25 percent of MCAS scores in their graduating class.

For them, Swett asked what they thought of standardized tests.

Despite her high scores, senior Paige Henri Fehskens answered, "I'd get rid of it. I'm a terrible test taker."

The last students to take the stage were the girls indoor and outdoor track teams, who were recognized by the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association for their high academic excellence last year.

Coach Chris Gardener read the names of the the students. The indoor team had an average 3.46 GPA and the outdoor had a 3.54 average.

Several school committee members praised the students for their achievements.

"I think that it's really a tribute to our school system and also your parents and your hard work," said Dr. Cliff Sylvia. "I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your hard work. I don't want anyone to say the Viking spirit is dead. Up here we have the Viking spirit loud and clear."
