Students donate meals for those in need to gobble up over Thanksgiving

More than 20 boxes of turkeys, vegetables, stuffing and rolls made their way to St. Patrick’s Church on Monday, donated and packaged by Wareham Middle School students.

Viking Time groups at the school put together decorated boxes full of Thanksgiving meal essentials for families in need in the community, organized by Sue Akins, the school nurse.

St. Patrick’s Church is distributing the food on Tuesday morning, with a list of 91 families who have requested food for the holiday. Donations from the community have made it possible to give meals to all those families, said Joanne Manley, president of the Society of St. Vincent De Paul at St. Patrick’s.

“We’re not a wealthy community, but we are a generous community,” Manley said.

The middle school collected items last year for Thanksgiving too, but this year they more than doubled the number of families they are helping. Akins said the students worked hard on the project.

“It feels good that we’re helping people in need,” said middle school student Aleks Rocha.
