Students explore grief and math in ‘Proof’

Dec 3, 2019

“It’s a love story with math:” That’s how student actor Indiana Troupe described Proof, the play the Viking Theatre Company will be performing this weekend.

The play tackles some heavy content in addition to the high-level math, including mental illness, grief, sexism, and the denial of female genius, explained actor Jenna Maloney.

The play is the story of a young woman who is mourning her father who made major contributions to various mathematical fields. After his death, his daughter struggles with her own mental health and to prove her own genius.

The cast, rounded out by Laura Clements and Colby Flanigan, is small.

“All four of our characters are very different, and we put a lot of work into crafting each character,” said Maloney.

The production is almost completely student driven. Students select the play, and fill all the major roles offstage: producer, director, and stage manager. The sets, lighting, and costumes are all produced by students.

The actors expressed their gratitude to Director Carolyn Gomes-Vieira for her guidance and the freedom she gives them.

“It’s a really great hands-on lesson in what it’s like in a production,” said Flanigan. “It really inspires us to love what we do.”
“She treats us all like equals,” added Maloney.

The show will be performed from 7 to 9 p.m. on Dec. 5, 6, and 7, and from noon to 2 p.m. on Dec. 8.

Tickets cost $10 for general admission and $7 for students and seniors, and are available online at www.showtix4u.com/event-details/35536 or at the box office.
