Children said thank you to Wareham Police officers for their service by planting flowers in front of the department on Tuesday.

The children, part of the CARE Summer Program's science class, were on lockdown on July 10 when police responded to a threat of a shooting in the school. The children, ages 8 to 10, planted the flowers to show their appreciation to the police for keeping them safe.

"I wanted them to see police officers on a better note," said Giovanna Tuell, the CARE program's science teacher. She said the children were happy to have the opportunity to do something nice for the police and to see that they are not scary. Walmart donated the flowers for the project.

"I like police officers and I like planting," said Kayla Boucher, age 8. "I think it's a nice thing for the community and it will make the police officers' station look a lot prettier."

Wareham Police Chief Kevin Walsh said the gesture was appreciated by the police department.

"This was a very nice surprise for us," Walsh said. "We're very thankful."
