Students raise funds, have fun at Boosterthon run

With music booming from loudspeakers, cheering spectators and dancing, Thursday’s Boosterthon Fun Run didn’t resemble a fundraiser, it looked like a party. Amid the fun, the PTA-sponsored event raised thousands of dollars for programs at Minot Forest and Decas Elementary Schools.

Now in its second year, the run got cash and blood flowing as students raced around a makeshift track in the field next to Decas Elementary.

Organized by Boosterthon, the run culminated a week of character-building and fitness-focused school activities. The group helps school districts raise money, with a focus on fun and inclusion.

“The character building is so important,” said PTA member Shanna Andrews. “The activities got the kids to think about what it means to be part of their school.”

Students raise funds by collecting pledges or flat donations for how many laps they plan on walking or running around the short track.

Last year, students raised a total of $84,000. Of that, the elementary schools received $44,000 after Boosterthon's fees for hosting.

Andrews said the Minot Forest funds went towards a new playground that was built by volunteers just last weekend. She said the money from this year’s run will be dedicated to outdoor classrooms at Decas. The classrooms will provide seating and cover for students to learn lessons in the fresh air.

“The classrooms get students outside in the sunshine instead of being stuck inside all day,’ said Andrews.

On Thursday, the run lasted for five hours. Minot Forest students were bused to Decas. Boosterthon employees danced, cheered and pumped up the crowd, encouraging all kids to be safe, have fun and show some appreciation to their parents, teachers and each other.
