Students recognized for achievements and courage

At Wednesday’s meeting, the School Committee recognized three students for their accomplishments. They are:

Amber Filkins, a Wareham High School senior and standout on the girls varsity basketball team, was recognized for her contributions on and off the court. Filkins scored her 1,000th point to tie a game with Bourne at the end of the season with 8 seconds left and to send the game into overtime.

“It’s been a great four years,” said Filkins, who has already been accepted to several colleges.  “I could not have done it without my teammates, my coaches, and my family.”

School Committee member Ken Fontes said: “What is great about Amber is her volunteering for summer basketball and doing it because that is what she loves.”

Filkins works part-time at the Gleason Family YMCA.  “She is an amazing example at the YMCA -- continuing to give back and being a mentor toward the next generation,” said School Committee Chair Rhonda Veugen.

Jarrett Speroni, a foster child and senior at West Wareham Academy, recently earned emergency medical technicial (EMT) certification.

“I had 10 cents in my pocket and had to start all over again,” said Speroni of being taken away from abusive parents.

Speroni attended Bridgewater State University last summer for his EMT training. He earned certification three weeks ago, will be a lifeguard at the YMCA in Middleboro and will enter the paramedic program at Cape Cod Community College in the fall.

“When I was taken away from my family, I was 15 years old,” Speroni told the committee. “I was the family loser, and I wanted to change that.  I was the third member of my family to graduate high school, and now I am going to be the first person in my family to go to college. Without West Wareham Academy, I wouldn’t be here today.”

Said Fontes: “It goes full circle. West Wareham Academy saved you, and now you’re going to be in a position to save a lot of people.”

Tariq Johnson, a senior at Wareham High School, has bravely faced significant health challenges. In addition to the School Committee’s recognition, Selectmen have proclaimed March 18 as Tariq Johnson Day.
