Summer of Celebration to kick off with militia encampment

Jun 4, 2014

The Summer of Celebration is finally here. Kicking off the season will be a series of events on June 13, 14 and 15 to commemorate the attack of the HMS Nimrod on the Town of Wareham in the War of 1812. The attack occurred 200 years ago on June 13, 1814.

On Saturday, June 14 and 15 there will be a militia encampment in the Wareham Historic District Area, upper Main Street, the Town Green and the Tremont Nail Factory area.

Visitors will be able to see how early American and British soldiers built their camps and prepared for battle. There will be a mock battle, rides and activities for all ages, as well as traditional music from the New Bedford Sea Chantey Chorus.

The encampment will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on June 14 and from 10 a.m. to noon on June 15. At noon on the 15, the Wareham militiamen will reenact their brave battle against the British forces in a reenactment of the attack of the HMS Nimrod. The historic reenactment will take place in Besse Park and music will be provided by the Wareham Fife and Drum Corps.
