Summer fun at the Boys & Girls Club
The Boys & Girls Club of Wareham, a unit of the Boys & Girls Club of Greater New Bedford, is accepting applications for Summer Fun, an eight-week summer program, open to children ages 7 to 13.
The program offers stimulating, fun activities including field games, arts and crafts, computers, game room, basketball, weekly field trips, beach days and more. The summer program provides children with a safe, stimulating, and fun environment that will not only keep them busy, but also actively learning.
Last summer, Wareham Garden Club members opened up their gardens for a special mini garden tour that was supposed to be fairly brief, but turned into a several-hour trip that proved to be most exciting to a group of 7 and 8-year-old boys as they learned about fish ponds and sheep shearing and watched and listened to an osprey guarding her nest.
“This was summer learning at its best," said Barbara Sullivan, club director. “The boys not only chased the frogs around Peter Labouliere’s fish pond, but the former science teacher explained the science of maintaining a fish pond, quizzed the boys, who though appearing distracted, were able to answer every question posed to them. It was a most exciting and adventurous time as the tour continued with marshmallows plucked from a ‘marshmallow tree’ at the McMorrow farm and wading for crabs at Chris Decas’."
The program costs $400.00 for any 6 weeks. Additional weeks may be purchased at $65 each. Fewer weeks are available at $80.00 per week. Both options require a $25.00 Boys & Girls Club membership.
The program’s regular hours are Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., with early drop-off at 7:30 a.m. and late pick-up at 6 p.m. available for an extra charge. Financial assistance is available to qualifying applicants.
