Sweaty kids hit the track for Middle School's second Field Day

The yells of excited children floated over the athletic field of the Wareham Middle School last Thursday afternoon, as the sixth grade students wrapped up the school’s second Field Day.

English language arts teacher Janelle Brangwynne said she couldn’t believe how positive and encouraging the students were to one another during the Field Day games.

“It was so wonderful to hear them cheering each other on, when, sometimes, they are so negative -- they’re wicked negative, and mean to each other,” Brangwynne said. “This is an awesome experience, where they’re being so positive, and so good to each other.”

Brangwynne said the students got to choose two events they wanted to participate in, during the morning session. The afternoon session saw relay races, which students had the option to participate in, or simply watch.

Gym teachers Nicole Stahmer and Chris Perry said they thought the event was an important way to help the children express themselves differently.

“It’s a time for them to shine, and show what they are like outside of those walls,” Stahmer said, nodding towards the middle school. “Outside of those four walls, they can be completely different people. Moving and learning is so important, and they show it out here.”

Stahmer and Perry agreed that, if they were to add anything at next year’s Field Day, it would be music.

“I can’t wait to … work on something like a group movement that they could show,” Stahmer said. “That’s kind of my goal.”

Sixth-grader Julia Elicier won the overall girls student fitness award, and first place for the mile run, the high jump, and the 100-yard dash. Elicier said her favorite part of the day was “coming out here and spending time with my friends, and being able to be athletic.”

“It was a fun day,” Elicier said.

But it wasn’t just the students who had a good time.

“I’m supposed to be on my prep right now, but I chose to stay out here, because I am having so much fun,” Brangwynne said.
