Swifts Beach Little League team completes perfect season

Jul 22, 2014

For the seventh year in a row, the Swifts Beach team has won the Wareham Little League Major League crown. This year they were nothing short of perfect.

The Swifts Beach team went 24-0 on the the season, capping it all off with a 22-8 victory over the Tremont team in the Championship game on July 15.

"The kids all worked really hard," said Chris Thornell, assistant coach of the Swifts Beach team. Thornell attributed the success of the team to head coach Ron Frazier, whom Thornell said has been coaching in Wareham Little League for 30 years years and is responsible for at least half of the league's championship teams over that time period.

The Major League is comprised of five teams, which is smaller than years past, spanning West Wareham to Onset. The Little League also has a Minor League division made up of four teams with players of the same age. The more experienced and skilled players play in the Major League.

The Swifts Beach perfect season was not without its close calls. After an 11-10 victory over the Tremont team two-thirds of the way through the season, the Swifts Beach team outscored teams 80-3 in their final five regular season games.

"It was a bit of a wake up call," said Thornell.

Five of the players from the Swifts Beach team went on to play for the Wareham All-Star team, which participated in the Little League World Series district tournment before losing to Barnstable, which is further than they gone in recent years.
