Tax auction generates $200,000 in revenue for Wareham
Two properties, one small waterview lot on Allen Avenue and a ranch-style home on Camardo Drive, sold for a total of $206,900 at a public auction on Tuesday.
Approximately 20 people arrived for a “spirited and competitive” bidding, said auctioneer Paul Zekos of The Zekos Group. The company organized the bidding process.
Both properties were taken by the town after the non-payment of taxes. Funds from the sale will be put in the town’s general fund, said Town Administrator Derek Sullivan.
Sullivan said the auction not only provides a one-time influx of cash for the town, but more importantly will allow those properties to start generating municipal revenue again.
“We’re always happy to see these properties bought, fixed up and returned to the tax rolls,” said Sullivan.
Zekos agreed.
“It’s folks like you that come in clean these properties and make the community a little better,” said Zekos.
For the auction, all bidders had to provide a $10,000 deposit that was held by The Zekos Group during the auction. On top of the sale price, a $5,000 fee was assessed and a 7 percent buyers premium.
Zekos noted that both properties were being sold “as is.” The Camardo Drive home was open the morning of the auction for bidders to inspect. The Allen Avenue plot had no structures on it.
The single-family home is 1,104 square feet and is located on a .42-acre lot at 13 Camardo Drive. The other parcel is located on .28 acres overlooking Broad Marsh River at 18-20 Allen Avenue.
Zekos said his company does not disclose the names of winning bidders.
