Teddy watch 2018: Wareham waits for hometown 'American Idol' singer to appear
Wareham soul singer Teddy Mathews still hasn’t been featured on "American Idol" this season, including in Sunday night’s episode, but his fans can continue to hope he'll appear soon.
"American Idol" premiered on March 11 on ABC, with judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie. Mathews, 21, was sent to Hollywood for a taping after a successful audition in New York City.
Mathews doesn’t know when he’ll be shown on “American Idol” yet, either.
“Had roughly 13 billion people ask if I’ll be on @AmericanIdol this week and y’all 500,000 people auditioned so like there’s a lot of contestants that need their moment,” Mathews tweeted on Sunday. “Chill lol I will let y’all know when I’ll be on as soon as I know myself, just enjoy the show for now!”
Mathews’ mom, Alicia Thatcher, said she does expect her son will be featured in an audition episode of the show soon.
“They had us walk through the streets and have conversation while we were in New York City and they filmed us,” she said. “But we don’t really know how they’re putting everything together. Everything is really, really hush-hush.”
Thatcher went to the audition in New York City with her son and even had a brush with the celebrity judges.
“The judges came out of the elevator and I was right there,” Thatcher said. “I was less than an arm’s length from Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan.”
Thatcher said she waited outside the audition room with Mathews’ friends while he had the audition and that he had a conversation with the judges. Mathews received a golden ticket to go to Hollywood and continue in the “American Idol” competition, but Thatcher can’t say how far he got in the competition.
For now, Thatcher is enjoying watching the “American Idol” auditions along with everyone else.
“I’ve found the cast of characters on the show to be very interesting,” Thatcher said. “It’s been interesting to see what Teddy has seen.”
Thatcher said she watches the episodes while her son is in his bedroom with his guitar and piano, but they connect and comment on what’s happening in each episode.
Mathews was sent to Hollywood for taping in January. A send-off party was held for Mathews in Onset where he performed for around 300 well-wishers.
At the party, Mathews told Wareham Week he was touched by the support from the community. He has to keep quiet about a lot of the details, but many people saw him in an "American Idol" ad during the American Music Awards and got excited for him.
Thatcher said the support from the community has been overwhelming.
“A lot of his former teachers from middle school came [to the send-off party],” she said. “One teacher gave him an envelope full of notes of encouragement for teachers and students at Wareham Middle School. It was really, really huge for us as a family to feel that support.”
Thatcher said she and Mathews are grateful for the enthusiasm they’ve received, as people in the community are organizing viewing parties for “American Idol” and staying tuned for Mathews to make an appearance.
Auditions continue to be aired March 19 and 25, so hometown fans can continue to hope to see Mathews during an audition episode soon.
