Thank you for making Boys & Girls Club summer program a success

To the Editor:

A heartfelt thank you to all who helped make the Boys & Girls Club of Wareham's 10-week summer program a success.

As usual, it was a very busy time, with some club members arriving as early as 7:30 a.m. and some leaving as late as 6 p.m.

Each day was filled with arts and crafts, game room activities, bowling, roller-skating, court activities, anti-bullying workshops, movies, and the beach.

At the annual Family Fun Day, parents and siblings joined us for lunch and water activities. Again, the Gleason Family YMCA provided the opportunity for club members to use their outdoor pool, which was a special treat.

New this summer was the invitation and funding provided by New Bedford Community Rowing, led by Anne Eisenmenger. New Bedford Community Rowing provided rowing camp for six club members. Some of the participants had never been in a boat of any type, and were thrilled to be introduced to a new sport.

Joanne Byron, Wareham resident and former tennis pro, provided a free, six-week tennis cam for club members and other Wareham youth for the third year. Her team of volunteers included local high school students and adults, as well as one volunteer who traveled from Wayland, Mass. each week.

The club offers a low-cost alternative to traditional daycare, which is especially important for working families. Financial assistance was available to families who needed it through a grant from the A.D. Makepeace Neighborhood Fund.
