Things to do: Clean beaches and practice yoga with laughter
There’s always a lot to do in Wareham. This week, enjoy some less blustery weather with a beach cleanup day and with yoga at the First Congressional Church.
Friday, Sept. 29
Beach calligraphy
Join South African calligrapher, Andrew van der Merwe, for a presentation of his beach calligraphy at the Wareham Free Library at 7 p.m.
Van der Merwe has pioneered a new and different form of calligraphy. In this slide show/lecture he will show and tell how it all began, the discoveries he made and the tools and techniques he developed.
Saturday, Sept. 30
Beach cleanup in Onset Village
September is National Recovery Month. Help give back to the community with a beach clean up in Onset Village, hosted by Richie’s Road to Recovery.
Meet up at 8:30 a.m. at the Onset Bay Center, 286 Onset Avenue. Free parking is provided, along with supplies and refreshments.
Build an informational kiosk
Join the Wareham Land Trust for a September Trail Day, to build and install an informational kiosk at the start of the Red Brook Trail.
The kiosk construction will take place from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at 110 Red Brook Road, Plymouth. Tools will be provided.
Family friendly best friends
Attend the free family Best Friends Carnival from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The carnival will take place at 237 Sandwich Road. There will be food trucks, a train ride, a fire truck ride, petting zoo, reptile exhibit, pony rides, cotton candy, snow cones, bubble fairy and lots of carnival games.
Fireworks over Onset Bay
The Harvest Moon Festival has been postponed to Saturday, Sept. 30.
Come out for cornhole
Redmen Hall, 745 Main Street, will host a cornhole tournament. Proceeds from the tournament will go toward the Redmen Building Improvement Fund.
Registration begins at 12 p.m. and costs $20 per person. Festivities will begin at 1 p.m. There will be a blind draw for teams, beer and food.

Laughter truly is the best medicine.
Doug Savage will hold classes in laughter yoga, the practice of using controlled laughter to improve physical and mental wellness, at the First Congregational Church of Wareham, 11 Gibbs Ave. on Oct. 4, 11, 18 and 25 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. For any questions, call 774-269-3143.
