Tigers B-squad moves on to next round of regionals

Nov 25, 2013

The Wareham Tigers B-squad is one win away from a trip to the Pop Warner national championship in Orlando Florida after defeating West Haven Connecticut Sunday, 32-18.

Next Saturday, they'll play the winner of a game between East Bay Rhode Island and North County out of Gardner Massachusetts. The game will be held at Foley Field in Worchester.

"It was actually a back and forth game," said Tigers President Joseph Silvia.  "We scored and they scored, then we scored and they scored, then we scored a touchdown just to run the clock out."

Isaac Nascimento had one touchdown, as did Nick Perry, while Elijah  McAlister scored two.

According to Silvia, McAlister ran more than 50 yards for each touchdown.

"When that kid gets a hold, there's no catching him," Silvia said of McAlister.

If the team does win the next game and earn the right to compete in Florida there's one more hurdle they'll have to clear, and it's not  athletic, it's financial.

"If they win they'll need a lot of money to go to Florida," Silvia said, noting that teams aren't allowed to start raising money until pretty late in the season.

The C-squad lost to West Haven Connecticut Sunday, 26-0 after a tremendous season. Even though their journey for the year ended at Spillane, they have plenty to be proud of after taking the squad all the way to the second round of regionals.

"Just two wins shy of Florida. We've never had more than one team do this well ever," Silvia noted.

"[The C-squad] team was very good, they just had a hard time moving the ball,  hard time getting first downs," Silvia said of the offense on Sunday.

Unfortunately, West Haven as able to break through the Tigers' line.

"We just had  a hard time containing them," said Silvia.

The cold and the wind also hampered the team's efforts.

"What's put them over the top in the last month is they've thrown the ball a lot and well," which was difficult to do in Sunday's strong winds. Silvia said that if the team had played Saturday "it would have been an entirely different game."
