Tobey Road could have potential to host shops

The Planning Board on Monday voted to back an effort by the owners of four Tobey Road properties, currently zoned for industrial use, to rezone the land for retail use.

Margaret Ishihara, attorney for the landowners pointed out that the plots are located between Wareham Crossing and Walmart -- making retail use more in line with neighboring properties.

“The surrounding uses are basically retail," Ishihara said. "The Wareham Crossing Mall, and Walmart. Then you have this island of property surrounded by or adjacent to retail spaces.”

The four owners of the plots of land are Bayside Agricultural, and three trusts set up by the Beaton, Buckingham, and Rogers families.

The Planning Board also gave favorable recommendation for a Town Meeting article related to the creation of new “junk bylaws”. Wareham's Junk Study Committee drafted new bylaws that would give enforcement and licensing powers to the Board of Selectman for retail resellers.

Tom Bicki, a member of the Junk Study Committee, appeared before the Board to answer any of their questions, of which he informed them that junk bylaws would pertain to businesses in which reselling is the businesses' primary focus, including antique shops and flea markets, as well as organizations that maintain donation bins.
