Town invited to downtown marina ground-breaking on Wednesday

The long-awaited marina, pavilion and restaurant project will begin construction after a ground-breaking ceremony open to the public on Wednesday afternoon, local businessman Danny Warren said Monday.

Warren said the town is invited to the ground-breaking at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at 59 Main St., where he envisions a business on the water offering ice cream, meals and open space to passersby downtown. The businessman said State Sen. Marc Pacheco is slated to make an appearance Wednesday afternoon.

“We’ve got some of the heavy equipment in place for putting the marina in,” Warren said, adding that the first step of construction is putting the marina together.

Parts of the marina have already been built, Warren said, so come Wednesday the hope is to lay the pre-built pieces onto the water and fit them together like a puzzle. Putting the marina together may take just 10 days, he said, and then drainage and construction of the project’s buildings can begin.

The ground-breaking comes weeks after Warren said further delays could tank the project.

The project was kick-started after the Planning Board approved his plans during last week’s meeting, months after his initial proposal.

The week before, Warren had warned the board that further time delays could seriously derail the marina project. A combination of rising costs and a nearing federal deadline to complete the project by — or risk incurring federal fines — worried Warren, he said, and lessened his confidence that the project could be completed at all if it didn’t start immediately.
