Town prepares for another round of extreme winter weather

Feb 12, 2016

Another bout of winter weather is on the way – and this time, it’s the freezing cold of which residents will have to be aware.

The National Weather Service currently predicts temperatures below freezing for Saturday into Sunday, beginning Saturday evening with temperatures down to -2 degrees, and down to -23 degrees with wind chill. Winds are expected to reach up to 43 miles per hour Saturday evening. Less than an inch of snow is also expected for the area.

Town Administrator Derek Sullivan did not say if the town plans to set up warming stations, or offer places for people to shelter from the cold. Instead, he said family and friends should check on each other, and that families should never use a gas or charcoal grill to heat their homes.

Pastor David Shaw of the Emmanuel Church of the Nazarene said his church will be open Saturday evening for Nights of Hospitality, and that homeless individuals and those without heat are welcome to stay until 12 p.m. the following morning. Those who wish to stay into the later morning must attend the worship service from 9:30 a.m. – 10:45 a.m.

Shaw said that if he can find extra supervisory help, the church will be able to accommodate people staying inside past 12 p.m.
