Town prepares for Cranberry Harvest Festival

Sep 29, 2015

With the 12th annual Cranberry Harvest Festival just over a week away, AD Makepeace spokeswoman Linda Burke said festival-goers have even more to look forward to this year.

The festival will take place on Oct. 10 and 11 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the AD Makepeace property. In addition to the farmers’ market, pumpkin painting, and paddleboat rides, Burke said attendees will be able to explore a “labyrinth” designed specially for the festival by Plymouth-based Foster Creative Design.

Though the designer is still working on the details, “it will have a fall theme, and it will be fun!” Burke said in an email.

The festival began in 2004, Burke said, when then-new President and CEO of AD Makepeace, Michael Hogan, decided to try to educate residents on the cranberry industry in a fun, accessible way.

“He thought it would be a good idea to bring people onto the property, … and let people see what we do for work,” Burke said.

AD Makepeace is the world’s largest cranberry grower, and the largest private property owner in Massachusetts. As host of the festival, Burke said attendees may look forward to exploring several acres of the property, including actual cranberry bogs.

“The primary part of the festival is when you take a bus out to a cranberry bog, and we’ve got this big display set up,” Burke said. “You can see the cranberry harvest at all its different phases.”

Burke said there will also be an array of crafters, a birds of prey exhibit, and a chance to take a helicopter ride. The helicopter ride costs extra, but the festival itself is $10 for adults, $5 for seniors, and free for children 7 and younger. For more information, visit AD Makepeace's festival page.
