Town rakes in $200k from auction
A May 22 auction of land of low value and properties seized by the town for non-payment of taxes brought in approximately $221,650.
The money is "unbudgeted revenue for the town, so at the end of the year, it'll become free cash," said Treasurer/Collector John Foster.
The auction included 40 parcels of land of low value, which cannot be built upon, and 19 tax possession properties.
Foster said many of the owners of the land of low value properties stopped paying taxes back in the 1980s or 1990s. The auction brings in revenue for the town, gets the properties into the hands of people that will maintain them, and back on the tax roll, Foster said.
The auction was last held in 2008, but Foster said the town is working to make it an annual occurrence.
