Town secures first new ambulance since 2006

Jul 31, 2014

For the first time since 2006, Wareham has acquired a new ambulance.

Director of EMS David Evans said the four wheel drive Ram 5500 Heavy Duty ambulance hit the road for the first time at 4 p.m. on Tuesday and saw its first piece of action by 5 p.m.

Town Administrator Derek Sullivan said the ambulance was funded through the EMS budget. He said the ambulance was purchased through a capital lease program, meaning the town will own the ambulance midway through 2016. The other two ambulances Wareham has are from 2006 and 2001.

“Thirteen years old is ancient for an ambulance,” said Evans.

While it would appear this new ambulance would bring Wareham's total up to three, it's not quite that simple.

“This would have made three but one broke down yesterday,”Evans said.

"When ambulances are down we're not generating revenue," said Sullivan, who hopes the town will be able to add a new ambulance every three years.

Evans said the EMS staff is just glad to have one new one.

“They’re excited they finally have a new vehicle instead of one that’s constantly breaking down,” he said.
