Town sets tax rate early

The Town of Wareham on Friday, Nov. 13, became the 77th of the 351 communities in Massachusetts to set its tax rate – the earliest that the town has set its rate in at least 15 years.

The tax rate for fiscal year 2016, which began July 1 and concludes on June 30, 2016, is $11.36 per $1,000 of a property’s assessed value.

“This success is due to the hard work of many of the Town’s staff,” said Town Administrator Derek Sullivan, “but particularly Finance Director John Foster, Town Accountant Judith Lauzon, Director of Assessing Jacqui Nichols, and the diligent staff in each of their departments."

Sullivan thanked the Mass. Department of Revenue’s Division of Local Services representatives assigned to the Town. “The state’s team believed in Wareham enough to grant it access to an accelerated tax rate setting program known as TAP, and then worked with greatly-reduced staff to help us stay on track,” Sullivan explained.
