Town of Wareham searching for oldest citizen for Boston Post Cane

Dec 18, 2012

The Town of Wareham is looking to award its oldest citizen with the Boston Post Cane.

The Boston Post Cane award was started in 1909 by the now-defunct Boston Post. The awards were given to Selectmen and presented to the town's oldest living man or woman. Many towns in New England still carry on the tradition.

Wareham's most recent recipient of the award, Gladys Ide, passed away on October 9 at the age of 101.

Think you or a family member may be Wareham's oldest citizen? Contact the Selectmen’s office at 508-291-3100 x3101, or e-mail jwilson@wareham.ma.us. The deadline to contact the office is January 14, 2013.

Birth dates will be verified by the Town Clerk’s office.
