Town's median age increases
May 6, 2011
The median age of town residents has increased by 12% from 2000 to 2010, according to the latest detailed data collected by the U.S. Census Bureau and released last week.
The median age is now 44, up from 39 in 2000.
For data-gathering purposes, the Census divides Wareham into four tracts:
- West Wareham – comprising what is commonly known as West Wareham, south to Cromesett Point
- Wareham Center – that includes all of Wareham Center stretching to Great Neck
- Onset – which covers Onset Village to the Bourne line
- White Island Shores – comprised of northeast Wareham, including Shangri-La
In all four tracts the median age increased by five years. The median age in West Wareham, Wareham Center, Onset, and White Island Shores is now 48.1, 43.8, 45.7, and 37.1, respectively.
The increase reflects a larger trend in the region and in the state. In Massachusetts, the median age grew to 39, up from 36 in the state for a 8% increase.
