Tremont Nail district approved, allowing construction to begin

The Board of Selectmen received official approval from the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office of the Tremont Nail Factory Redevelopment Overlay District on March 14.

The Attorney General typically reviews bylaws within 90 days, but the office received a letter challenging the by-law shortly before the end of that period. Because the office had to review the letter point by point, the time it took to improve the bylaw was increased.

Now that the zoning district has been approved, work can begin at the Nail Factory.

On February 5, the Board of Selectmen unanimously approved a deal with Organa Brands, a Colorado-based marijuana processing and manufacturing company. The company will pay the town between $184,000 and $300,000 in rent each year, depending on how much business it does.

The company will also be renovating the steel building. The renovation is required because of the presence of mold in the building, which is not acceptable for a facility that would be processing marijuana.

The company will be paying for the renovation, which officials estimate will cost a quarter of a million dollars.

“The only effect that this complaint had was to delay construction at Tremont Nail,” said Selectman Peter Teitelbaum.
