Trial for man accused of killing Wareham resident Scotty Monteiro delayed

Jan 8, 2013

The trial date for Vernon T. Carter of New Bedford, the man accused of murdering Wareham resident Scotty Monteiro Jr. in 2009, has been pushed to a yet-to-be-determined date.

Jury selection for Carter's trial was scheduled to begin Monday, Jan. 7, and the trial itself was expected to start Jan. 8, according to a clerk at Plymouth County Superior Court in Brockton.

There will be a hearing on Jan. 24, but the clerk's office could not say what the hearing is about, or when a new trial date will be set.

Carter allegedly pulled a gun on a friend of Monteiro's at a party in 2009 in an attempt to steal a necklace from him, then turned the gun on Monteiro when he approached him in what witnesses say was an effort to stop the situation from getting any worse.

Carter has been in jail for the three years since Monteiro was killed, and is currently incarcerated at the Barnstable County House of Correction.

Carter is charged with one count of murder, one count of armed robbery, two counts of carrying a firearm without a license, two charges of carrying a firearm without a license, two charges of possession of a firearm without a firearms identification card, and one charge of assault and battery, according to court documents.
