Tropical Storm/Hurricane notice to mariners

Oct 25, 2012

The Wareham Harbormaster Department has issued a notice to mariners in the wake of a National Weather Service prediction that Hurricane Sandy could bring severe weather to the area.

All boaters are urged to take the necessary precautions, including pulling vessels out of the water. The Harbormaster Department urges people not to wait until the last minute, and to check with their marinas to see if they are included on a preplanned "emergency haul list."

Boaters who use public docks including Besse Park, Onset Pier, Tempest Knob Boat Ramp, and any other town owned dock will have their boats removed from the water, at the expense of the owner, if they do not remove their boats from the water within 24 hours of the storm making landfall.

For mariners who decide to leave their boats in the water, remove all loose gear, take down canvas and secure any equipment that could come loose.Inspect mooring lines, and add extra pennant lines and storm anchors if necessary.

Also, keep a spare throw anchor on board in case the boat breaks free from it's mooring. Ensure that engines, bilge pumps, and generators are all working properly.

Make sure all batteries are fully charged and do a check of all safety equipment. Boaters are also encouraged to attach extra fenders to boats for protection from hull damage.

The Harbormaster want to discourage people from "riding out the storm." The Harbormaster Department requests that anyone who insists on doing so contact the Harbormaster to file a "float plan," and to wear a life jacket or survival suit during the storm.

If there are any questions or concerns the Harbormaster can be reached at 508-291-3100, ext. 3186.
