Two men safe after boat capsizes

Two men escaped injury after a small boat capsized Saturday morning, prompting a brief search and rescue operation by authorities from Wareham, Marion and the Coast Guard.

Assistant Harbormaster Michael McGuire said a fisherman called police at 9:47 a.m. to report an overturned and abandoned 13-foot vessel drifting near the end of Stoney Point Dike. The popular fishing spot is close to the southern entrance of the Cape Cod Canal.

McGuire said after officials found a pair of boots and gas tank on board, the search began.

“We took all the necessary precautions,” said Wareham Harbormaster Garry Buckminster.

Because the boat wasn’t registered, McGuire said authorities were unsure who may have been on board at the time. At approximately 10:30 a.m., a boat arrived on the scene from the Wareham River and its occupant reported that he had plucked two men from the water earlier that morning.

The men were from Middleboro and Wareham.

McGuire said its important for boaters to register their boats and let friends and families know where they are going to be before heading out on the water.

“Last year, we had between 400 to 600 calls related to unmanned boats in this area,” McGuire said. “Every time we find one we’ve got to figure we’re looking for a missing person. It’s a daily occurrence down here.”

In addition to the harbormaster officials from Wareham and Marion, members of the Wareham Police and Fire Departments, in addition to the Coast Guard, responded to the scene.
