Two Tiger squads heading to Super Bowl

Nov 6, 2013

A couple of Pop Warner teams have been running roughshod over the competition all season, and on Saturday two squads will compete for the chance to go to the New England Region Football playoffs.

The Wareham Tigers B and C squads are heading to the Super Bowl Saturday, November 10. The B squad will kick off against Taunton at 10:45 a.m., and the C squad will square off against Brockton at 12:30 p.m.

The B squad is undefeated this season, and holds an impressive record of 38-3 over four seasons. Head Coach Chris Perry doesn't want to be overconfident, but it's fair to say he has faith in his players.

"We've already played this team at the beginning of the season and we beat them 27-0," he said of Taunton. "Brockton was the only team that scored on us all year."

The B squad won the Super Bowl last year and made it to the New England final four regionals, where they were eliminated in the second round.

Perry expects his players to take to the gridiron with the same skill and tenacity they've displayed all season.

"Isaac [Nascimento] is our QB, running back and linebacker. He and Legend [Fernandes] hooked up for a lot of touchdown passes throughout the year," Perry says.

Another player to watch according to Perry is Elijah  McAllister, who plays running back and cornerback.

"He's quick out of the back field," said Perry. "He's had some big runs this year."

The Tigers C squad is heading into the Super Bowl against Brockton with an undefeated record as well.  The squad had no problem defeating Brockton earlier this year when they shut them out 19-0.

"The schedule we had was tougher than last year but these kids have played great all season,"  said head coach Mike Cote.

Cote says that quarterback Justin Lopes has proven to be an effective leader and a productive scorer.

"Very physical very tough. Good leader; he pushes the other kids to be the best they can,"  Cote says.

With only 14 points scored on them all season, Cote says Kiran Pina, Luke Burke, Desi Powell and Brian Whitney have all contributed to holding back the offenses of other Pop Warner teams.

"That's my defensive line right there, pretty much nothing gets by them."

Much like Perry, he doesn't want to be overconfident heading into Saturday's game, but he knows he's working with a talented and hardworking group of kids.

"They make it very easy to coach them. As much as I would like to take credit for everything, it's all them."
