Two Wareham farms awarded state grants
Two Wareham cranberry companies will receive state grants for energy and environmental improvement projects.
Agawam Cranberry Company, Inc., received a grant for an automated irrigation system project, and Bartholomew Family Bogs LLC received a grant for a water conveyance system project, according to State Senator Marc Pacheco's office.
The Agricultural Environmental Enhancement Program (AEEP) funds wastewater treatment projects, pesticide storage and automated irrigation systems, among other projects. The grants are aimed at reducing energy consumption and increasing energy efficiency.
“The benefits of this grant program are two-fold; they support Massachusetts farmers who continue to provide the food and resources the Commonwealth needs to survive, but they also ensure that crucial responsibility is done in a cleaner manner,” said Pacheco, who also chairs the Senate Committee on Global Warming and Climate Change. “These important sustainability upgrades improve our public health while they also keep local farms viable by cutting down on their energy costs.”
A total of $700,000 in grants were awarded to 56 farmers in Massachusetts.
