UConn Husky Jalen Adams offers hoops clinic for Wareham players

A UConn Husky offered lessons on life and basketball for Wareham players on Saturday, July 7, during the first of four youth clinics to be held this month.

Jalen Adams, a senior guard for the college’s team, met with about 40 kids during the clinic, held at the courts next to the Multi-Service Center on Marion Road.

The clinics replace the Tony Dias Memorial Basketball League, which had been held for the past four years at the courts. Joel Watters, who founded the league, said the clinics would provide more benefit to players.

“Rather than packing in four or five games into one month, we thought it would have a greater impact on the kids to have skills and drills taught by someone from a high caliber program,” said Watters.

During the clinic, Adams fielded questions and worked out with the players, showing them his intense routine.

“He offered some life lessons and some encouragement, motivation to keep the kids going,” said Watters. “He worked out with the kids too, showing them what a player like him has to do to stay on top of his game.”

Adams is one four guests to be featured at the clinics, which are run by Watters and former Wareham player and current Bishop Stang High School basketball coach Colbey Santos.

Watters said future guests include a player from Providence College and a coach from Boston College. Clinics costs $10 per session and are held from 9 to 11 a.m. at the courts. Clinics will be held Saturdays in July.
