United Way's Day of Caring brings together nonprofits, volunteers

The walls of Damien’s Place Food Pantry in Wareham have a fresh coat of paint courtesy of the United Way of Greater New Bedford’s annual Day of Caring.

Held on Friday, the event featured roughly 70 volunteers fanning out across the South Coast. Participants offered nonprofits across the region a helping hand for a variety of projects.

In Wareham, Janet Robichaud, a member of Damien’s board of directors, said she was grateful for the help.

“It’s great to see people stepping forward to do some good in the world,” she said.

On Friday, United Way volunteer Jim Grasela assisted Robichaud in sprucing up Damien's with new paint. He said this was his sixth year volunteering for the Day of Caring and noted that the United Way hosts two such days a year, one in the spring and one in the fall.

Other groups that benefited include the New Bedford Whaling Museum, Sharing the Harvest Community Farm in Dartmouth, St. Luke’s Hospital and more.
