Update: Arson arrest made in Tyler Avenue fire
Wareham Police arrested 56-year-old Joyce Dietlin on arson charges Wednesday stemming from a fire in the building she lived in on Saturday, March 22.
Nearly 50 firefighters from the Wareham, Onset, Carver and Marion fire departments fought the blaze allegedly set by Dietlin that tore through both sides of the house at 5 Tyler Ave., Saturday afternoon.
Dietlin was arrested in Plymouth by Wareham detectives and troopers assigned to the State Fire Marshal's office on Wednesday, March 26, according to police officials.
Dietlin was transported to the Wareham Police Department for booking procedures, then to the Wareham District Court for arraignment on the charge of arson of a dwelling.
The investigation was by the conducted by the Wareham Police and Fire departments, the Onset Fire Department and the state Police and state Fire Marshal.
Officials said the building was a sober house for women in recovery.
The alarm came at 3:06 p.m. on Saturday and there were 11 fire vehicles on the scene at the peak of what Wareham Fire Chief Robert McDuffy called "a very stubborn fire."
According to officials, the fire caused $170,000 in damage to the two-story, five-bedroom house. No one was injured as a result of the fire.
Firefighters were on the scene for four hours, using hooks, axes, and saws to remove parts of the building on the outside and the inside on both stories.
Route 6 was cut down to one lane between Depot Street and Tyler Avenue to provide access to a fire hydrant.
At the scene, residents of the house said that the house was occupied at the time and everyone who lived there was accounted for.
