UPDATE: Two Wareham men arrested in connection to daytime break-in

Feb 7, 2014

Two Wareham men were arrested two days apart in connection with a residential break-in on Tuesday, Feb. 4.

Joseph Tavares, 25, and Thomas Clancy, 34, both of East Wareham, were arrested and charged with breaking and entering and malicious destruction of property in connection to a break-in at 87 Mayflower Lane on Tuesday.

Patrol officers responded to the incident Tuesday evening. A resident reported being awakened by two masked men, who ran from the residence upon being noticed. No weapons were shown by the suspects, and no injuries occurred during the incident.

During a search of the area, officers received an anonymous tip via the Wareham Police Department Text-A-Tip program, which led to a search at 79 Puritan Ave., where jewelry owned by a resident at 87 Mayflower Lane was recovered.

Officers connected Tavares, of 79 Puritan Ave., to the crime and placed him under arrest. In addition to the breaking and entering charges, Tavares was charged with larceny under $250. He was to be arraigned at Wareham 4th District Court on Thursday, Feb. 6.

Further investigation showed that Clancy was the second male who entered the residence with Tavares and he was arrested at his home on Thursday.

Additional charges were brought against Clancy regarding the theft of a vehicle and a residential breaking and entering incident reported at 21 King Drive in West Wareham on Saturday, Feb. 1. The stolen vehicle was recovered in East Wareham on Feb. 3.

Clancy was charged with nighttime breaking and entering and larceny of a motor vehicle and was scheduled to be arraigned on all charges on Feb. 7 at Wareham District Court.

Interim Chief of Police Kevin Walsh praised the investigative police work of the involved officer and detectives during this incident, as well as the information provided through Text-A-Tip.

The program, which can be accessed through the Wareham Police website, allows the public to provide anonymous information that is relayed to officers and detectives.
