UPDATE: Wareham man struck while crossing Marion Road

Aug 4, 2014

A 58-year old Wareham man was hit while crossing Marion Road Monday at approximately 2:20 p.m., according to the Wareham Police Department

The incident occurred near a crosswalk between the Wareham Service Station (at the top of Swifts Beach Road) and the Wareham Country Market. Police said it appeared the man was attempting to cross the roadway in front of a slowing vehicle in the travel lane and was struck by an eastbound vehicle traveling in the passing lane of Marion Road.

Wareham EMS personnel were on scene and treated the victim for several minutes before transporting him to Tobey Hospital at 2:40 p.m. Police said the man, who is not yet being identified, was later transferred to a Boston area hospital via Med-Flight and that the sustained injuries do not appear to be life-threatening at this time.

Police questioned a woman who appeared to be the operator of a blue 2002 Honda Civic that remained parked in the roadway facing northeast on Marion Road. Police later said the driver of that vehicle that struck the man was 29-year-old Nichole Nye of Marion.

An unidentified witness at the scene was overheard saying, “She should have stopped.”

Steve King, a resident of Swifts Beach, did not see the accident take place, but said he had seen several accidents in that particular area of late.

“That’s a hot spot,” said King of the area on Marion Road, which is also a part of Route 6. “People just fly 50 or 60 miles an hour through here. I just saw a big accident over here a week or two ago.”

Police said the investigation of the incident is ongoing and Wareham Week will provide more information on the incident as it becomes available.
